How the ROI calculator works
The calculator prices two review paths for every claim file: what an adjuster and, where needed, an attorney spend reviewing it today, and what the same file costs with amaise doing the first pass. The difference is your savings.
| Result | Formula |
|---|---|
| Adjuster review cost (today) | adjuster hourly cost × review hours (low‑high range) |
| Attorney review + summary cost (today) | attorney hourly cost × (review hours + summary hours) × share of cases needing attorney review |
| Cost per case with amaise | adjuster cost at 0.5h + attorney cost at half the review/summary time + amaise platform fee |
| Savings per case | cost today − cost with amaise |
| Portfolio savings | savings per case × claim volume |
| Portfolio ROI | savings per case ÷ amaise platform fee |
Every input is editable and the calculator updates live, so you can match it to your own claim volume, wage rates and review times.
How the defaults were chosen
| Input | Default | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Claim volume | 1,000 | A representative period volume for a mid‑size P&C claims team. Scale it to your own book. |
| Adjuster hourly cost | $100 | Fully loaded rate covering wages and benefits for an experienced claims adjuster.1,2 |
| Adjuster review time (low‑high) | 2–3h | Typical range to read, index and evaluate a claim file's documents without AI assistance. |
| Adjuster review time with amaise | 0.5h | Time to verify an AI-generated summary against its source pages, rather than reading the full file. |
| Share of cases needing attorney review | 50% | Share of files, typically litigated or higher-severity claims, that also get attorney document review. |
| Attorney hourly cost | $250 | Blended rate for outside or in-house counsel time on claim files.1 |
| Attorney review and summary time | 4h / 2h | Typical hours an attorney spends reviewing records and preparing a summary, before AI assistance. |
| Attorney time with amaise | Half of each | Verifying an AI-prepared review and summary typically takes about half the unassisted time. |
| amaise platform fee | $250 | Per-case fee for AI-assisted document review and summarization. |
Worked example: a 1,000‑case portfolio
At the defaults, adjuster review alone costs $200 to $300 per case, and attorney review and summary add another $750 for the half of cases that need it, putting the unassisted cost at $950 to $1,050 per case.
- With amaise, verifying the adjuster summary costs about $50, verifying attorney review and summary about $375, plus the $250 platform fee, for a total of about $675 per case.
- That is $275 to $375 saved per case, or $275,000 to $375,000 across 1,000 cases.
- Against the $250 platform fee, that is a 1.1× to 1.5× return on every dollar spent with amaise.
Savings scale directly with claim volume and attorney involvement. A book with a higher share of litigated files, or higher attorney billing rates, sees a larger return.
What drives document review cost in P&C claims?
Review cost is driven by how many files need attorney involvement, how experienced the reviewer is, and how much of the file is duplicate or low-value paper.
- Attorney involvement. Litigated and higher-severity files often get a second, more expensive review pass on top of the adjuster's.
- Longer records. The median outpatient progress note grew 60.1% longer between 2009 and 2018, from 401 to 642 words.3
- Duplication. In a study of 104 million notes, 50.1% of all note text was copied from earlier notes.4
- Caseloads. Claim professionals handling litigated files carry an average of 78.5 to 130.6 pending files.5
- Administrative load. 46% of workers' comp frontline staff spend 30 to 40 percent or more of their time on administrative tasks.6
Why the return goes beyond reviewer hours
Faster, more consistent document review also shortens cycle times and reduces claims leakage, which this calculator does not count.
Bain estimates that generative AI could reduce loss-adjusting expenses by 20% to 25% and leakage by 30% to 50% in P&C claims.7 Those gains come from the same place as the savings above: adjusters and attorneys who know what is in the file sooner make better decisions sooner.
How to reduce document review cost
- Remove duplicate pages before anyone reads the file.
- Route files by severity, so attorney time goes only where it changes outcomes.
- Use one summary template across adjusters and attorneys.
- Use AI-assisted review that links every extracted fact to its source page, so reviewers verify instead of re-reading.
- Measure cost per case before and after, using this calculator's baseline.
